OpenAI has just released new SORA videos. Well, let’s take a look!

Not long ago I uploaded a very successful (by my standards) video about SORA from OpenAI. If you haven’t seen it yet, click up here first and then come back.

On their BLOG OpenAI has posted new videos generated with artificial intelligence. This time artists were invited to try out the revolutionary tool. After his test, the director Paul Trillo says the following: “SORA works best when you don’t try to copy something old, but realize new, fantastic ideas that would otherwise never have seen the light of day.”

Before we look at his contribution, let’s take a look at the work of augmented and mixed-reality artist Don Allen Stevenson III.

His film is what I immediately thought of: it looks like a National Geographic animal documentary, but with entirely new kinds of creatures. For example the Giraffamingo. We soar into the skies with flying pigs. We explore the habitat of the horsefly and watch the fox-crow hop from branch to branch.

Who would watch that: well, me. “With its strong wings the flying pig rises into the air. It is a swarm animal.” Pigtastic!

But now to Paul Trillo, director by trade. He realized 4 ideas right away. An endless drive – I think that’s mega!, a, let’s say: sustainable break-dancer, something like the Silver Surfer on steroids. And – the mirror-ball man. I think that’s what he means by “realizing new, fantastic ideas”. Creating worlds that would otherwise not exist. Trying out new concepts of storytelling.

Nik Kleverov, creative director at the agency Native Foreign, was also allowed to play with SORA. The two tinkerers here are bathed in such a lovely, cozy, warm mood that it would keep me watching. But what I liked best was his film noir clip: (trailer voice) In the dark streets of a decaying city, a man desperately searches for truth and justice. Amid the wisps of smoke and the shadows of the night, a world full of intrigue and danger reveals itself!

In black and white SORA is almost even more convincing.

I have two more before we get to my favorite clip. First August Kamp, Auguste Kamp – whichever – musician and artist. Who basically asked SORA how she imagines an LSD trip. And Josephine Miller, who uses something like glass mosaic as clothing. The haute couture show of course takes place underwater! Looks impressive.

But now to my highlight:
“Air Head” from the production company shy kids from Toronto.

A man with a balloon for a head. What a great idea! Yes, the balloon isn’t always the same size. Presumably it would have to be smaller as a teenager and grow over time. The color also differs repeatedly and in ways that aren’t comprehensible. You know – comprehensible – well – logical in this universe. So for example filled with smoke, green because he feels sick, or he turns red when he talks to girls. All of that still breaks the spell at the moment, but consistency of locations and people is a topic of its own that will surely be solved soon too.
Where it really got me, though: that was the cactus shop!
I physically felt along with how he struggles through the aisle and I could feel the fear. Not on purpose – I knew I was watching an artificially created video. And yet it got me. That – for everyone who says: “AI has no soul!!”

I just uploaded an interview: AI TALK with the well-known music producer Thomas Foster – he says: (THOMAS) “We want to feel the human behind it.”

I think – shy kids managed that – and, loosely translated, at the end of their test they say:
“As good as SORA may be at creating real things – we are most impressed by creating totally surreal stuff”.

Feel free to write what videos, what crazy worlds YOU would create.
