The DEMISE of the DUBBING INDUSTRY 🎤
AI WILL REPLACE US ALL!!
Not all of us, certainly – but the dubbing industry has just taken quite a blow.
With HeyGen I can create a virtual avatar of myself and have it speak any text. Or I use one of the ready-made avatars.
A new HeyGen feature is the Video Translate function.
Translation – and here it comes! Lip-synced speech with my own voice, e.g. in Mandarin, French, Polish, Spanish, and so on and so on.
My prediction:
I expect – in the future there will simply be a selection menu on #Netflix and #YouTube like for subtitles and dubbing languages.
Then Bruce Willis suddenly speaks German with his own voice – or even a language that is never dubbed because too few people in the world speak it. #LowerSorbian is spoken by only about 7,000 people, for example. Wouldn’t it be amazing to preserve this language forever. Globally there are about 2,500 languages – some of them acutely threatened with extinction. Not anymore – right?
But what does this now mean for the #dubbingindustry? In Germany we are very spoiled with translations. We “know” the German voices of international superstars like Brad Pitt or Jennifer Lawrence. These are mostly trained actors who record take by take, painstakingly, in expensively rented dubbing studios. Are all these people, and also the people at the translation office, the editors, sound engineers – are they all unemployed from tomorrow?
Why should a film studio spend a lot of money on something AI does automatically? We are in a #transitionphase of the entire industry.
Is it a question of when? When will the AI film be better?
When can AI come up with more surprising twists than an author? Design more bombastic action sequences than Roland Emmerich?
I’m insanely excited and curious about further developments.

I had announced in the video that I would record a few German corny jokes to translate them into Korean with AI.
There you go!
